THE HISTORY OF HASKELL
Haskell Proud Since 1884
Haskell Indian Nations University is a tribal university located in Lawrence, Kansas, for members of federally recognized Native American tribes in the United States. Founded in 1884 as a residential boarding school for American Indian children, the school has developed as a North Central Association-accredited university that offers both associate and baccalaureate degrees.
The Haskell Cultural Center and Museum opened on September 14, 2002, with the vision of respectfully serving as a steward of living tribal materials, traditions and cultural arts. Using these tools as a vehicle of transmission, the Haskell Cultural Center and Museum truthfully conveys the story of Haskell’s remarkable evolution from a government boarding school to its present day fully accredited University status.
